The same alluvium severed the port city of Kaunos from the sea, turning its harbour into today's Sülüklü Göl. Excavations have run without a break since 1966, yet none of it has become a single public narrative. One trace of the frontier stands in the middle of the lake: the island holds the ruins of a fort used first for military purposes and later as a prison. Locally the ruins are attributed to the Genoese; no archaeological dating could be found in open sources.11
